A Place for You in Time

Your coat still hangs beside the door. A little dust along the sleeve. The station clock has lost a hand, But keeps the hour You had to leave. I count the trains that cross the bay, As if one might bring back that day. I keep a place for you in time. Where all our unfinished days remain. The years move on, the tide turns slow, But I still know the way you came. If you should look behind you once, Past every mile we learned to lose. I keep a place for you in time, A quiet room with your old Shoes. The kitchen tile is cold at dawn. Your cup is chipped along the rim. I pour the tea the way you like, Then watch the window growing dim. The harbor bell rings through the rain, And leaves your name inside the Frame. I keep a place for you in time. Where all our unfinished days remain. The years move on, the tide turns slow, But I still know the way you came. If you should look behind you once, Past every mile we learned to lose. I keep a place for you in time, A quiet room with your old Shoes. Maybe the road was yours to take. Maybe the silence had to stay. Still every spring, the lilacs bloom, Beside the step where you would wait. I keep a place for you in time. Where all our unfinished days remain. The years move on, the tide turns slow. Still I know the way you came. If you should look behind you once. Past every mile we learned to lose. I keep a place for you in time. A quiet room with Your old shoes. Your coat still hangs beside the door. Leave the porch light as Before.
