A Quiet Room

You left your coat beside the stairs The winter dust still clings to blue I found your note beneath the clock The ink had faded not the truth And every year I pass that door And count the words we never said If time could turn its hands around I’d meet you where the river bends Before the last train shook the town Before we learned how goodbyes end I keep a place for you somehow A quiet room inside my heart Though all these years have carried us To separate and distant parts The record skips at half past ten Your laugh comes through the worn out groove I watch the curtains stir again As if the house remembers you And every year I pass that door And hear the words we never said If time could turn its hands around I’d meet you where the river bends Before the last train shook the town Before we learned how goodbyes end I keep a place for you somehow A quiet room inside my heart Though all these years have carried us To separate and distant parts Somewhere beyond the years we lost You may be looking back as well No map can show what silence cost No photograph can quite retell If time could turn its hands around I’d meet you where the river bends Before the last train shook the town Before we learned how goodbyes end I keep a place for you somehow A quiet room inside my heart Though all these years have carried us To separate and distant parts The coat is gone the stairs remain Your name still rests beside the clock
