Crossing

You on that side, me on this one. Same blue water Cutting us apart. Your hands in the reeds, my hands in the Foam. We watch the currents Carry our names. I can see you clear as dawn, but the Miles of river keep us wrong. One good crossing would change it all. One steady line over the fall. Oh, build me a crossing, build me one. Build me a crossing to where you run. Same river, same heart, different banks, Same sky. Build me a crossing so you and I can lie. So you and I can lie. You send a stone, I send a song. They sink and circle, then drift along. The bank keeps asking who’ll go first. I say your name like a prayer in thirst. Let the timbers hold, let the nails bite in. Let the water rage and still let us begin. I don’t swap forever, I don’t need gold. Just one brave way from your hand to hold. Oh, build me a crossing, build me one. Build me a crossing to where you run. Same river, same heart, different banks, Same sky. Build me a crossing So you and I can lie. Build me a crossing, And I will come. Build me a crossing to where the same shore In the sun.
