The Blues Beneath My Smile

I smile when the morning finds me, Say I'm doing just fine. But there's a shadow underneath it that nobody can See inside. I laugh when somebody asks me if I'm finally Moving on. But when the lights go down at midnight, That brave face is gone. I learned how to hide the hurting. I learned how to say I'm okay. But a heart can wear a smile and still Be breaking every day. There's a blues beneath my smile, Sorrow underneath my skin. I can fool the whole wide world, But I can't fool what's within. Every tear I never showed you still remembers where We've been. There's a blues beneath my smile, And it keeps calling you again. I dance when the music's playing. I raise my glass with friends. Nobody knows how much I'm fighting When the evening finally ends. Your memory waits in the silence like a song I can't forget. I can hide you from the world, but I Can't hide you from my heart yet. Maybe one day this old sorrow Will become a softer song.
