To My Grandson

Sleep little one. Oh, I can't wait tonight. Grandpa's arms will keep you right, Till morning brings its light. You don't know the roads I've walked, The tears these eyes have known. But when I hold you close like this, I don't feel so alone. Your daddy once was just like you, A little hand in mine. Back when life still made some sense, And everything felt fine. Then your grandmother went to heaven, And I lost more than I could bear. I tried to hide my broken heart, But darkness found me there. I reached for bottles instead of God, And pushed away the ones I loved. Your daddy couldn't watch me fall, So one day, He gave up. So sleep, My little grandson, safe beneath God's Grace. You don't know how much healing Lies inside your face. Because the Lord who never left me, When I lost my way, Sent a little piece of mercy Into my arms today. Mm. Years went by like winter winds, Quiet, cold, and long. I prayed for things I'd broken and begged God To make me strong. Then one day your daddy came back With tears inside his eyes. He said, "Dad, let's leave the past behind," And I broke down and cried. Then he placed you in my arms, And son, I'll never forget, How God answered years of prayers in a moment I hadn't missed. Sleep, My little grandson, dream beneath God's Light. The same Lord who carried Grandpa Will hold your hand tonight. And if one day Life breaks your heart, As life sometimes can do, Remember God can rebuild anything. He rebuilt me through you. Oh. One day you'll hear the stories About mistakes I've made. How I lost myself in sorrow After your grandma Passed away. But I hope you'll also hear that God's mercy never ends. Sometimes He sends a grandchild To bring a family whole Again. Sleep, My little grandson, While Grandpa watches you. The greatest gift God gave me Wasn't something new. It was a second chance at family, A second chance at love, Wrapped inside two tiny hands, Sent from heaven above. And when I'm gone, remember this. Before my life was through, God healed an old man's broken Heart Through you.
