The Night They Saw Me Cry

Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. Mm-hmm. The night I lost your mother, Something broke inside of me. Charlie stood there in the doorway. Rose was only three. I tried to hide the tears from them. Tried to be strong somehow. But children see the pain we hide, Even when we don't know how. Charlie watched his father falling. Rose just held my hand. The night they saw me cry Was the night our world changed. Nothing looked the same again. Nothing felt the same. Charlie stopped believing my words. Rose stopped asking why. And all I could give them back then were Tears I couldn't hide. I started drowning in the whiskey, Trying to outrun the pain. Every bottle promised healing, But left me more ashamed. Charlie slowly pulled away. The house grew cold and still. And every empty chair reminded me Of everything I'd killed. I lost my wife. Then I started losing my sons. The night they saw me cry, They watched their father fall. I was supposed to be their shelter, But I couldn't stand at all. Charlie left without a goodbye. Rose hardly spoke my name. And every night I blamed myself For everything I'd changed. Then one night, With no one left, No wife, no son, No peace, I fell down on my knees and whispered, "Jesus, If You're still there, please don't give up on Me." The night they saw me cry Wasn't the end of me. Because Jesus found this broken man and gave him Eyes to see. I still pray for Charlie. I still pray for Rose.
