I Was a Kid

I was a kid with a pair of worn-out Shoes. A pocket full of pennies And nothing to lose. A bicycle leaning By the old front door, And a world that seemed bigger Than it does anymore. We'd run through the summer Till the evening came. Come home when the streetlights called our name. Mama had dinner waiting by the kitchen light, And somehow everything always felt Right. I was a kid, Before the years moved fast. Before I learned How nothing ever lasts. I had a little dream And a sky so wide. I didn't need much To feel alive. Daddy taught me patience by the river down the Road. Said, "Son, take your time, there's no prize for Carrying every load." I didn't understand him till I became his age. Now I hear those words on every turning Page. I was a kid, Before the years moved fast. Before I learned How nothing ever lasts. I had a little dream And a sky so wide. I didn't need much to Feel alive. Sometimes I close my eyes And I can see that street. Hear the sound of summer underneath my feet. If I could tell that little boy one thing Before he goes, I'd say, "Hold on to the wonder Longer than you know." I was a kid, And maybe somewhere still. There's a little piece of me That always will. I carry every lesson, Every road I've tried. And that little boy Is still walking by my side. I was a kid, And the years went by. But I still remember That endless sky.
