Legacy Commentary

We hope you have enjoyed the Cadillac Three's Legacy Album release special. We have come to the final track on the Album, and this is a special one. Legacy, first of all, such an incredible song, So well-written, and also one that really just tugs At the heartstrings at the same time. So Jaren, you have talked about the fact that In, in the past you may have given a Song like this away, and, and I started thinking, I could hear Tim McGraw grabbing this song the Minute it was available if you'd given it to Him, and yet now you feel like you've gotten To a place in your life. And so I'm Wondering what brought you to that place. Is it your son? Is it where you're at In your marriage? Was it just personal growth? I wrote this song before we'd had Jude. I think we were pregnant maybe. And you know that, I've got a little bit Of a past or history of writing songs kind Of like this, but this one was really cool Because it actually meant something this time, And it wasn't in my mind to make this A Cadillac song at all. And Neil heard one Of the co-writers sing it at the, uh, Bluebird, And she said, "I wrote this with Jaren." And Neil texted me in the middle of it. Goes, "Send me that Legacy song." Mm. "You bastard" you know? We, we have a long history of not playing Each other songs that we've written that are maybe The ones that we should keep, and I remember It. Raise that was another, another example of one Where, you know, luckily Laura played it that night, And I think it was on hold for somebody, TR or somebody. I think, I TR had it On hold and McGraw had it on hold-and They were back to back, and-So it was One of those where you had to go like, "Hey, uh, we're gonna take that back" which isn't Necessarily a fun conversation to have to have. It's right. We've had it a couple times and It's never, never fun. Um, and TR was really cool about it, So that's good. Um-He's doing all right he, He's probably gonna be fine. Um- Poor guy. That one though, I mean, it struck Me really hard that night, but I was a Little drunk, so then I listened to it again The next morning and it was really great. And you know, I think it was one of Those where I had to egg Jaren on a L-for a second, you know? But-Mm but I think once we cut it, We really knew. I mean, it had a really Special quality to it, and the way we cut It I'm really proud of. It's really different for Us. All the instrumentation. I remember that one, I mean, that was challenging To cut. The playing on that is different than We've ever done before, so when we finally nailed It, you know, it's got a lot of really, Like, rolly guitar stuff in it, and the drum Beat's not what I would normally play. And I remember the whole point of trying to Nail all that stuff is because it's such a Good lyric and such a good melody, you know, And so you wanna get the track right and- And sometimes you gotta force yourself to jump out Of your wheelhouse I think, especially further and Further you get into records, and flex some of Those muscles maybe you didn't know you had. And I think now that we've started playing it Live, it's, it's been really fun because, You know, that's a, that's a different thing. If you hear our, our set live, it's pretty In-intimidating and pretty loud and pretty in your Face, and that's a moment where w-we'll let Everybody breathe for a minute and pay attention to A, a pretty strong lyric, you know? Yeah, I mean, it is an incredible song and, And I think it's fantastic. But here's what I wanna know. When you decide to pick a title for your Album and you go with a word like Legacy, Which is a, it's a pretty bold, pretty audacious Word, was there any hesitance either, A, because there's sort of a sense of finality About Legacy, or B, because it might be misconstrued As arrogance? Was there a concern of the title? I think you get arrogance from us off the Top either way, just 'cause-you kind of have To be a little full of yourself to do What we do in a genre where nobody else Does it, and to think that you can get Away with it, you know? I think because of How strong the song was-Yeah I wasn't afraid Of it the way that you otherwise could be, You know? And I also like albums. You know, we're kind of known for being a Loud band that plays really loud songs, and I've Always liked albums where that was what they're Known for, but then the song that the album Is named after is, like, the quiet song. Right. You know? Rock and roll. Yeah, exactly. Like, I like that trick, you know, and maybe A lot of people won't even catch that necessarily, But maybe they will now. We talked about it, you know. But-It didn't feel wrong, so-we went talked About it, but it wasn't a hard decision to Make. We were like, "Okay, well let's just go For it." You know? It was, it, it felt Easy when we decided to do it. And now I do have another question about Legacy, And, and this is me just kind of nitpicking Because I was actually dissecting the lyrics and Looking into them and probably reading way more into It, but I'm going to guess that it was Only because it rhymed, but I gotta ask. Uh, the last lines you say, "When I'm gone, My name carved in stone. Over husband, friend, and Father. Survived by son, wife, and daughter" I'm Wondering, um, is there any foreshadowing to the Fact that you would like to have more kids, Bigger family, daughter? No, that one thing is if We do have-It rhymes a kid, I hope It's a damn daughter because otherwise that song Isn't gonna make any sense for the rest of My career. Uh, trust me, I've thought about that. Like I said, I wrote this song, it was A while ago, so I think, I think we Were pregnant and I didn't know what we were Having either way, so it still would've been, was A son. So I don't, yeah. You can name your son, like, Otter next time- Yeah, or something, you know, and you can just Change it to that. Well, I just never, you Know, I never-Like I said from the beginning, I never saw this as a Cadillac song. But that line was too good to rewrite, You know? I ain't gonna sit there and try To overlook that. You don't ruin a good moment, A song, just to make it make more sense For me, you know? mean, 'cause it could be... That's the great thing about good songs is you Listen to them and anybody can be that person The, in the story, you know? Mm-hmm. Makes sense. Well, I love this song. It is the title track for the Cadillac Three's New album, which is available now. This is Legacy.
