Can you just talk to me a little bit About Three Feet of Water, and just, I mean, How powerful that song is, and your faith and Being able to sort of show that off a Little bit? Up front about that song, I came in on the back end of it, And that's not something I make a habit out Of. That's not something I do often. I like to be there from the get-go. Oftentimes on the road, we'll spit out ideas, And as co-writers, you know, everybody brings ideas To the table. Or somebody, you know, Brian and Somebody might be sitting around in the bus and Start kicking something around, and I come in and We'll join up on it. But this song is One of the very few that Cledus T. Judd sent me-Wow one night. He called me. Of all people. Yeah. I mean, and that's way out of left Field. What people don't know about Cledus is Cledus Is a funny guy. Mm-hmm. Everybody knows that about him. But a lot of people don't know about Cledus Is he's got one of the biggest and best Hearts-Mm of anybody you'll know. And you hear it all the time that sometimes The funniest people you know are the most troubled People you know. Absolutely. And Cledus went through Some, some hard times, and made some life changes And some choices, and bettered his relationship with God, takes it very, very seriously now. I think he's traveling around. He just did a spoken word record. Oh, wow. Which was something I didn't expect from Him either. Right? But extremely serious spoken word Record. Hmm. And I think he's been traveling around Speaking at some churches. But he called me, and damn, it was early One morning. Mm-hmm. And I don't wake up, you know, usually during Touring season, I don't wake up till noon or Later, 'cause I stay up till 4:00 5:00. That's the only time between midnight and 4:00 5:00, It's the only time my phone doesn't blow up And I actually have time to gather my thoughts. But he called me one morning and said, "Man, I want you to listen to something for me, And this has happened to me in times in The past." And I was like, "All right. Cool. I'll, I'll listen to it tonight." And I planned on, you know, I'd, I'd listen To stuff like that that he'd send me if I was getting drug out one night and needed A break and needed something to lift my spirits Or just crack me up real quick. Yeah. You know, I'd put it in. But this one I put in, and from the Minute I heard the demo they had, The first piano note, just something resonated. I don't know how to explain it, but I'm Telling you, there was something about it. And I was waiting to hear the punchline, and I was just waiting on it to go south And be funny, and it-Right didn't happen. The opposite happened. It got real serious, but in An awesome way. Mm-hmm. And honestly, I had wrestled with three or four Different song ideas that I've had going. You know, each record has a few songs that Pertain particularly to my faith. Mm-hmm. And this one, I was kind of wrestling With three or four ideas. They just wouldn't do what I wanted them to Do. Yeah, they wouldn't submit. They just wouldn't come together. And I listened to this thing, and when I Heard what they had, it floored me, and I Knew there was something to it. And I called him and told him, I said, "Man, here's where I stand on it. I don't know that I want to touch that. If y'all have somebody that y'all want to pitch That to with it like it is, I don't Want to screw it up." he said, "I sent It to you because I want you to do Your thing with it. Make it yours. Change what you feel like you need to change." And I did that and sent it back to Him, and you know, the other co-writers liked what I did. And I don't really know how to Explain that song. I think it's one of those things you just Have to listen for yourself with open ears and An open heart. Let it play, listen to it, And see what it does. See what it moves, 'cause it moves something. Yeah, it does. It, it's so convicting, and just, I mean, if you have anything of God in Your heart or your spirit, I mean, it will Stir it. Even people that aren't necessarily Believers. There, there are people that I know in My life that I've played that song to, and One's a devout atheist. Oh, wow. And straight up said, "You know I Am, but that's amazing." There's something special there. There. I don't know what it is, wait for People to hear it. And I, I think they're Gonna be just surprised, because it's sort of a Different look for you, but it's such a beautiful Song, and you did such an amazing job with It that I just love it. Thank you. It was special all the way through The studio. The fella that played keys on that Song, name was Gordon Mote, and he's blind. Mm. Which nobody gave me a heads-up on that Before he came to the studio. And, uh, He walked in with his son. And I'm so happy that Dan Huff brought him In to play that song, 'cause I feel like Meeting him and spending that day with him made Me a better person. Oh, cool. He, he's just an unbelievable man. It, you know, from everything. He's made like small comments that at one point He said something like, I can't remember word for Word, but said something like, "You know, people Tell me they can't imagine going through life not Being able to see, and to me, I can't Imagine going through life being able to see. I'm scared I'd miss too much." Oh, wow. 'Cause he hears things and feels things. This man can tell you, like us sitting here Talking-Yeah he can tell you what key your Speaking voice is in. Oh, wow. And he wanted to try the song without a Click. Oh, wow. So, so without anything keeping us On tempo, we went in, and he was listening To my breath. He was listening to me sing And play. Mm. And I've never heard anybody play piano like That, ever. That's amazing. And, and just an unbelievable human Being. Him playing that song in the studio, I just feel like, I don't know. It's one of those songs. It's like one hell Of an amen. I don't know what it's gonna Do-Mm-hmm but I know it's gonna do something. I think it's gonna move people in great ways, And it's called Three Feet of Water on Big Machine Radio.
